One other important item for young coils builders to consider is that
vacuum tube Tesla coils are extremely lethal as compared to a neon sign
transformer powered unit. Most of these units operate at much lower
plate
potentials than spark gap coils, but the plate currents vary from 300 to
over 1000 ma.

If you accidently touch a neon you will probably scream a lot, but you
will
usually live through it. Touch a plate transformer output at 500 ma on
a
pair of 811A and you better pray that you really did have one hand in
your
pocket as Dr. Tesla suggested long ago.

Don't get me wrong--vacuum tube coils are very beautiful and their
radiation is great for demonstrations but young builders and anyone who
uses these coils around young people much exercise extreme caution.
They
are very quiet and unlike the rattlesnake (spark-gap coils) usually
don't
provide much warning before they bite.
