My two cents worth here is that my observations agree with Gary's. My
first cap had fairly thin, copper braid connecting the plates to the
terminals. After it blew up, I built my latest cap with about 6" wide
folded Al flashing connections to the Cap plates to allow skin effect to
give me greater current but the result was exactly the same length spark
as before, about 30". I also changed the primary tap from a cheapo thin
aligator clip to a 1/2" thick solid brass machined job but once again,
no difference.
