1) I never thought to put the thing in the freezer overnight. I just
hammered off small chunks till I got to the windings. I'll try this!
2) You didn't really immerse it in paint thinner did you? Eeee-gads!
Paint thinner can stay wet a very long time, especially in small
cracks and crevices. I use Xylene to wipe it off. It's just like
Acetone but stays wet a few minutes longer. I can remove all the
EXTERNAL tar this way and not mess with the windings
underneath. Makes it very clean and easy to handle. In ten minutes
it's dry as a bone!
3) Wouldn't immersing it in oil degrade the wax-paper windings?
Those paper windings arn't waxed that good and I would think oily
paper would just come apart after a while. I coat my neons with
polyeurothane varnish. I paint it on thick for about 45 minutes
until theres about four coats on it. The windings turn hard as a
rock and feel like solid plastic! Once dry I put rope-caulk used for
windows on it. It's easy to handle, removable, and never drys (has
some oil in it) and is non-conducting. One box covers it.

I'd like to hear from some of you who immerse neons in oil.
Doesn't the neon fall apart after a while? I mean, paper and oil
don't do well together do they? First time you pick it up wouldn't it
just fall apart?
I think I like my clean/dry solution better ;-)
