ED and all

When running synchronous gaps you must adjust the phase of the gaps so
that they fire near the peak of the waveform coming out of the
transformer. It appears that when harmonic charging is taking place the
phase of the waveform available to the TC primary is not necessairly in
phase with the mains. It is therefore necessary to adjust the phase of
the gaps to near the peak of the waveform across the caps. I do this by
rotating the motor in its mounts since the synchronous shaft rotates
with the motor.

Asynchronous gaps are never in phase since the motor seldom runs at a
harmonic of the mains. Adjustments move things around but they were
moving before the adjustment and phase has no meaning.
