        It's possible to identify polyurethane, and most other
        plastics quite reliably by means of comparative pyro-oleptic
        analysis.

        In other words you burn it and sniff it, and then compare
        that with a piece of known plastic (polyurethane in this
        case).

        It's not easy to distinguish between homologous polymers
        (such as polyethylene and polypropylene, or polyamides and
        polyimides), but otherwise such testing is surprisingly
        accurate.
