I was lucky enough a couple years ago to visit a small company in Baraboo,
Wisc. Their name is Resonance Research, and they were holding an open house
for the local community and to drum up business. They are in the business
of building medium to large tesla coils and van de-graf generators for
science museums and tourist traps. Besides putting out a spread of food and
soda, they demonstrated a medium sized coil for everyone. It was a 18" X
36" coil with rotary spark gap, pig transformer, and commercial capacitors.
It threw 6 foot sparks easily and wasn't quite tuned.
One of the demonstrations they showed us was the use of a Faraday
cage and putting people inside of it. The cage was made up of chain link
fencing and metal pipe frame. It was 4' X 4' X 6' and had one side that was
a chain fence door. Iy was well grounded by cables to the building.
Volunteer visitors would enter the cage and they would have sparks play all
over the grounded cage. They could hold onto the cage all they wanted as
long as they wouldn't stick their fingers through and make an attractive
spark collection point. (I didn't volunteer)
