Re primary tapping and arcing, I get vinyl tubing (which is available
in various diameters in plumbing supply places), slit it lengthwise
and press it over the copper tubing of the primary. When I'm tuning,
I can get an arc through the slit or even the vinyl, but I never see
turn-to-turn arcs. When I find the right place to tap, I shut off the
coil, make sure the main capacitor is discharged, then shove the tapping
wire or a crocodile slip through the slit in the vinyl.
