Re: Pole pigs -- costs

Question:> What is a Pole PIG???? IS it the same as those power
         > pole transformers...???

Have you ever heard the expression: "Like trying to catch a
greased pig!"

Power distribution transformers used to show up at electrical
salvage yards by the ton. They tend to lack good hand holds for
lifting and used units tend to be greasy from leaked transformer
oil. The salvage boys would say that they were "as hard to move
as greased pigs are to catch". The name stuck.

Rather than refer to "surplus power distribution transformer" the
term "pig" would be common in these circles.

Note too that the old days are gone. Those greasy pigs of
yesteryear are all but unobtainable. The transformer oil
contained a high percentage of persistant PCBs now banned by the
EPA. Old PCB containing pigs are typically handled through EPA
licensed salvage yards today, but with the changeover "PCB-FREE"
units are now showing up as surplus... They are just as hard to
move around.
