RE: Plexiglass Form
I sealed my pvc coil form ends with epoxied plexiglas discs and filled the
inside with dry nitrogen gas.
The discs were shaped so that they fit inside the tube and had a 1/2" rim
for easy winding. The end
wires were brought out through holes in the disks and laid along a radial
groove in the disk surface
(endmill). The bottom stud was brazed to a rectangular piece of brass. The
bottom coil disk
consisted of two plexiglas disks glued together (acetone). This bottom of
the top disk was milled
out to accomodate this rectangle. The end of the bolt with the rectangular
piece was put
through a hole in the bottom disk and attached with a nut and washer and to
the lower coil wire.
The top disk was then glued on top of this disk locking the square brass
stud holder in place.
A little epoxy was also added to the rectangular space around the brass
piece to keep it tight.
After this hardened the disk assembly was glued to the pvc tube. This
procedure was repeated
on the HV end with a longer bolt and 6" bee hive insulator. I have pulled 4
1/2' sparks from
the resulting 27" coil form without any tracking problems on the inside.
DATA: 27" pvc tube and winding length
5 lbs or 1000 feet of #18 B&S gauge magnet wire--MWS heavy formvar
coating: 5 cans of krylon acrylic spray
resonant frequency: 250khz, 200khz with 5X20 toroid

|The form I have the merchant says is cast. I used a hole cutting bit in the
|drill press to cut a cap for the top and a 6 inch base plate for mounting.
|Both plates will have a hole in the center but no wires on the inside of
the
|form. Is this an OK design or should I seal the holes completely. Also what
|would be the result of evacuation of the form and putting in neon, any
|adverse effects? Steve
