wire guage/signal gen.

All of the coils that I have experimented with have been small and using
a brute-force approach. I hope to build a larger coil and I want to get
my design right before I start building. Can anyone tell me the best way
to calculate the guage of wire that I should use on my secondary? I know
that the bigger the better, but what is a good rule of thumb to follow as
far as guage/wattage.

I could also use a simple single generating circuit for finding resonant
frequecies if anyone knows of a fairly simple schematic. Preferabley
adjustable from 50khz to 1mhz. I can't justify the expense of an
off-the-shelf unit and second-hand equipment is hard to find in my area.

Would be happy to talk to other beginners in the field or anyone
interested in UNUSUAL coil designs. You can e-mail me direct at:
