Don't know who told you that. I'm using two 12kV 60 mA neon sign
transformers in parallel and they work just fine. On a good day, I was
getting close to 48 inch sparks on a 4" O.D. secondary. For a small coil,
you can use a neon sign transformer or an oil burner transformer. That's
how I started out with a table top unit then I got WILD!!! My next coil
will be an 8" O.D. secondary.
