Re: PFC for neons

Is there a rule of thumb or a formula for determining
the capacitance for power factor correction on a neon
transformer? Would the typical motor start capacitor be OK
 for this assuming proper capacitance?
Also can a bank of neons be treated as a single transformer
and corrected with a single cap or should each one be treated
 individually?

Mike,

I think someone, maybe Richard Quick, did publish a list for proper sizing of
the pfc caps. Yes, motor start capacitors work great. If you have an AC
current meter, you can just try a few combinations and use the caps that
yeilds the lowest current. I would think you could treat all the
transformers together.
