400 hertz variacs -- A use for them?

Greetings,

After RQ's posting on ferrite toroids, I had an inspiration -- if the cores
of the 400Hz variacs are ferrite, I could get them, strip the wire and use
them for $5 ferrite toroids.  They are about 3" diameter, and so they may
work great.
