I doesn't "stand" for anything. It is slang for "power
distribution transformer".
It stems from the guys at the electrical salvage yards. Old
pole transformers, frequently coated with dirty transformer
oil and lacking comfortable handles, are notoriously difficult
to get a good grip on. They are compared to wrestling a "greased
pig" of county fair fame.
