Hi Barry,
          I certainly agree that proximity effect is the main bugbear
in obtaining best conductor utilization in close-wound coils but it 
is a magnetic phenomenon and not related to self-capacitance. The end 
effect is an increase in effective resistance and doesn't affect 
reactance. Purely a loss thing.
