I've never built a beer bottle/NaCl-H2O cap, but I have watched a glass
plate cap of mine arc.  Bad news!  After a few pops, it shattered a couple
plates.  I.e. Arcs == Bad.  If you can afford to do it, you should make
yourself a rolled capacitor.  You can get the instructions from the ftp
site (ftp.funet.fi /pub/sci/electrical/tesla)  For me, they have been
economical and rugged.  I have used 15kV neons and now use a 14400V pole
pig and have had no trouble with the rolled cap I made.
