The series resistor is a good idea, and would work fine.
Of course, you could always hook a DC meter (suitably bypassed
to protect against voltage breakdown) and the TC ammeter, to read
both DC and AC simultaneously. Of course, since the peak
currents are pretty high, maybe the peak voltage across the
TC ammeteris high enough that the direct diode shunt would work.
Howev er, a series R would work better.

P.S. I still think rectification is involved, even with the
assymetric damped waveform.
