Chuck,
On my coils I run the primary up all the way so that I'm
overcoupled and run a few short test runs. At first I slowly increase
the voltage/current until I detect corona/sparc output up and down
the secondary windings. If you insulated the secondary correctly
this may be difficult. If the corona does appear, this means you have
secondary resonate waves appearing. Back your primary down until the
corona stops. Your main arcs from your terminal should increase.

Also I've heard most coilers say that a good coupling of
.01-.02 should be used. I'm not sure what this means though. Inches,
centimeters from, etc.

My two cents.
