Malcolm,

The art of this stuff, of course is in the doing and I have found that it is 
ok to almost leave the spark on for the whole ring time of the secondary! 
 This is in a two coil system only!  The bad part comes in leaving the spark 
on for real long periods.  This wastes power in the gap and transformer. 
 Bumping and flaring of the  arc in the gap at the points is a sign of bad 
quenching and too long a dwell time.  Reduce the dwell time to the point 
where you have a white hot, circular ball at the gap and you are probably 
ok.  Jitter is a factor only in the uniform application of energy and really 
doesn't relate to dwell provided it is short enough to begin with.
