I would like to add my small experiences with solid state speed control
and tesla coils.  I had a small fan motor control that I tried to use
as an early rotary gap controller.  The tesla coil that I had was not 
very powerful, and I never got streamers from it even.  However, when 
I fired up the coil, the controller would lose control of the speed and 
the motor would race.  I bought the thing for about $10, so I wasn't worried
too much.  However, for something like you are looking at, I would balk
at putting out that much money for something that will most likely be 
adversely affected by the coil.
