Yes, I think we've all had to deal with the "...but what's it good for?"
question more times than we'd like. My answer gently points out that at the
very least, it has the same value as oil painting or homebrewing or flying
model airplanes; it's a hobby and it gives me great enjoyment. (Note: if you're
familiar with the hobbies of the individual who asked the question, you may
make a strategic substitution for one of the hobbies I mentioned.) I also
point out that on top of this, I've learned a great deal, which is also
very satisfying. These comments almost always produce approving nods of
agreement.
Then, once I see I've got 'em in an agreeable frame of mind, I begin to
tell them about Tesla...
