I have successfully made a fan motor (6 pole single
phase) sync by milling 6 flats on the rotor. The motor came from an A/C
condensing unit. It did not require much material to be removed.

There are instructions on the web and in the list archives for two pole
and four pole motors. Works the same with six pole, just more flats.
