If this is a finished wall it is likely hitting a fastener underneath
the drywall, and transferring the RF energy into the 2x4 stud.  Some
coilers have experienced near house fires from allowing an arc to
contact the wall (or ceiling) in this way, and it is a good idea to
avoid this type of contact at all costs.

For my "target" I set up a grounded rod on a tripod, but a ladder would
work just as well; just make sure that the return current goes either to
the ground or to your counterpoise.
