To all who replied - thank you very much.  I will download and try the
recommended software.  

In the meantime, I tried setting my computer clock back a year, and lo and
behold, DesignWorks Lite came back to life!  This technique might also work
for other trial version software that has "expired".

I had been using the free OrCAD 8.0 Pspice package, and while the schematic
capture may be lacking many things, the ability to simulate circuits was
HUGE!

I just got a Windows 8 PC, and sadly, I don't seem to be able to install
OrCAD.  I tried compatibility mode - no dice.

I don't want this to devolve into a Windows 8 bashing thread (no one has the
bandwidth for that), but has anyone installed  a free trial version of OrCAD
on W8?
