I'm sure someone will correct my bad use of words; the high voltage is
released as an impulse, it is not induced in the sense of induction. The
impulse needs to have maximum energy with minimum time during a single
cycle of firing a spark gap.

The mechanics of a distributor spark gap are just too slow and inefficient.
