Alright cool, just picked one of those up, 

Does the software usually have options to send an output to the USB converter? Or is that directly taken care of with drivers and the like?

You'd need a USB to MIDI adapter unless you have a high end sound card. But 
it's cheap stuff! 
On the software side any music studio/composer/virtual keyboard will most 
likely do.
