      Two thoughts float by:
        Chrome compounds can be highly carcinogenic.
        If a professional does the plating that may
        be better.

        The chrome becomes the 'skin' where the RF travels
        to some extent.  How does the resistivity of
        chrome compare to copper?  At higher freqs
        gold and silver plating is preferred to
        copper, on loss grounds.  Typical Tesla coil
        freqs are lower the resistivity of the 
        chrome may not be important.
