Re: [TCML] Re: For Sale: Big radioluminescent lamps!

Hello: Got the tubes yesterday and they are super. One thing though. When I got them at the post office, I was shocked to see that the flap on the envelope wasn't glued shut. The tubes could have fallen out. Maybe tape the envelopes shut as well. Just trying to help. Thanks again. Do you carry these tubes on a regular basis?

Best,

tom

Everyone who ordered a tube will have theirs shipped out today. Sorry for
ll the delay, I've been sick with the flu all week. Starting to feel
etter now, though.
If anyone else wants to buy one, just let me know! Not the flu; a tube. ;-)

 6½" tubes - $48
 5½" tubes - $42
 2¾" tubes - $30
 1¼" tubes - $20

Shipping cost ranges anywhere from free to $3, depending on where you
happen to reside. If you'd like any, just email me off list with your order.

For those who might be wondering...

 Q: What are these things?
A: Big ol' tritium light sources. Essentially, they're tubes which glow
for a LONG time, and they're hard to get unless you have a buddy who will
 allow you a manufacturing run.

 Q: How bright are they?
A: About as bright as a glow in the dark object freshly charged by a
blacklight. They really shine when your eyes are dark adjusted.

 Q: Are they dangerous?
A: Although the biggest tube contains about 1.8ci of tritium, the
isotope's beta energy of 5kEv is barely strong enough to penetrate skin,
let alone the tube's 1mm thick borosilicate walls.

If it breaks it's not that big of a deal. Just open a window and leave for
a few hours and the gas will dissipate. If you breathe any in, your body
will excrete any absorbed H3 rather quickly (~2 weeks).

 Q: Why so expensive?
A: Tritium is $55,000 per gram. Keep in mind though, these tubes last for
 20 years! That's a very long time.

Q: Where else can you get big tubes like these?
 A: Nowhere ;)

 Q: Are they legal?
A: For the most part, just like lasers. There are laws passed against mass
distribution of tritium tubes because the NRC doesn't want these things to
end up on walmart shelves. As for small sales like this, it's not that huge
 of a concern.

If I suspect for any reason that you will use the tritium for ill-will, I
will refuse to sell to you. In reality though, there's not much harm one
could do with such a tiny amount of the gas.

Q: Where do I get all this cool stuff?
A: I have a locked treasure chest that noone but me is allowed to look
into. Unfortunately that chest will not fit in a dorm, so everything must
 go!
