RE: [TCML] Voltage - Gap

I have always thought that it would be an interesting experiment to build a
double-wheel rotary gap. I would use two disks, rotating in the same
direction. They would be lined up with one another, edge to edge. The disks
would have to be synchronized. A single motor with a toothed rive belt
should do the trick.

The current path through the system would be:

Fixed electrode> <Disk1> <Disk2> <Fixed electrode

Since the spinning electrodes would approach each other at twice the
peripheral speed of a single disk, the presentation between the electrodes
of the two disks to each other would likewise be twice as fast. This system
would also add an extra gap in the circuit, which may aid quenching.

Another use for this system would be in very large coils where heroic-sized
rotaries have traditionally been used to obtain fast enough presentation of
the electrodes. The disks in such double-disk systems would be smaller in
diameter, and could therefore rotate faster without as much danger of
disintegration of the disks.

Just a thought; it's probably already been done by someone on the list.
