Re: [TCML] Inductor

Thanks for the advice guys,

I am planning to push about 24Kv pk-pk thew the inductor. It will be the charging inductor for a DC coil design similar to steve youngs DC coil.

I was definitely planning on spreading the voltage out across multiple bobbins to keep the voltage stresses low.

I really like the idea of winding pancake coils. I was planning on using a 1"OD acrylic rod I have left over from a different project and then using weldon to attach the bobbin sides, its about 2ft long and I have tons of 1/8" acrylic that I can easily cut etc.

I am only using #21 because its what I have available, I was thinking about acquiring a new spool of #26 as that seems to be the size I end up using for all my secondary coils as well.

I am a visual learner, anyone have any pictures that can share? =)

Your right Jim, that other method does look very hard to do, I cant even visualize how it would be done.

Thanks,
John "Jay" Howson IV

What are you using as a bobbin?

AWG21 is easy to work with, not so insanely fine that it breaks easily,
not so big as to be too stiff to work with.

How much voltage are you planning to have across these inductors? There
are different winding patterns, some of which have better HV performance
than others.

For instance winding a "bottom layer" going one direction and a top
layer going the other direction puts high voltage between adjacent windings.

while doing a (harder to do, but works better) alternate keeps the
voltage stress lower:
