I must say that 36in is very nice for a first light, however it sounds as if your spark gap is not quenching properly and I would recommend increasing your tank capacity. This would drop your breakrate and increase the amount of energy supplied to the primary per pulse.  

Also, what does your SG sound like (it could help in a diagnosis)?
