Haha Joe, I was just kidding ;-) ! (you know how I am). Actually, possible you could use a snubber circuit in there somewhere to inhibit transients.

Really?  I thought it's the rectifier that dies first.  When it shorts it kills the fuse in the variac.   At least, that's the way it's happening on my driveway...
