Hey Joe,

I don't think it's good to run a Maxwell on it's side because of the space they 
leave for the dielectric to expand when heating. You might of had exposed 
plates.

Really?  I thought it's the rectifier that dies first.  When it shorts it kills 
the fuse in the variac.   At least, that's the way it's happening on my 
driveway...
