Who knows - Very possible, Gary.  I did move it to get a pic, but it was indeed close.   It was only about 6" below.   At this point I'm willing to believe all theories.  
I'll position the replacement in a more favorable configuration, further from the action.   Will post pics when I get a new cap and come up with a mounting strategy.
