Re: [TCML] Fan Shroud Toroid

I just made an interesting toroid from the cover off of a ceiling fan motor. The ceiling fan died and I disassembled the motor to see what had failed. My son picked up the cover and remarked that it resembled a toroid from a Tesla Coil. I agreed and used a rubber hammer to knock the center portion down flat so that it did make an actual toroid shape. At first, it looked more like a flying saucer. I now have a nice shiny brass colored steel toroid that is approximately 2.5" by 12".

Hello list,
I am in the process of building a 15/120 coil at the moment all I am lacking is the Terry filter but to make a long story short it will sport an el-cheapo Reny's stainless steel salad bowl top load approxamately 15" across, two silver soldered back to back and perhaps a smaller one underneath inverted kinda like the double torrid coils you see posted on the list from time to time. Happy sparking folks ... Binny ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brandon Garretson" <garretsontech@xxxxxxxxx>

Hey man,
Not a bad idea, but I wouldnt remove the paint. Those things are made from
mild steel and would rust within days in any climate.
I would instead grind off any sharp points and protrusions and cover it in
aluminum tape.
You could even paper mache it first, sand it down, hit it with a can of
clear lacquer, then cover it with aluminum tape.
Or again, leave the paint on it and cover it with copper or aluminum screen.
If it were aluminum under the paint I would say strip it, but I think the
steel would become problematic as it oxidizes.
The shape should work out just fine for a pseudo-toroidal top load.
I think that its a very good idea. Way to think outside the box man!
I love it when people find a way to work with what they have...

Hi All,
What do you think about a toroid made out of a fan shroud off of one of
those swiveling fans that we all pull out in the summer? It's certainly got the shape, but can anyone think of any structural or integral issues besides
removing the white paint?
Thanks Everybody,
