Have just checked with a scope using a pickup coil looking at a magnet on one 
channel, and the mains on the other and it is synchronous

Or if you dont have access to a scope, lock onto it with an adjustable
strobe light and watch it for a few seconds.
If you cannot get it to appear stationary then it is not synchronous.
