No, won't work, but you can replace the NST spark gap and tank capacitor all together and just pump RF into a primary coil, I believe this is how most of the old solid state systems worked, I also believe you'll never get the arc lengths from systems like these you would from a disruptive spark gap system. You could do SISG or DRSSTC to get good sparks from a "solid state" system, but your complexity is very high compared to spark gap, like Gary said, get your coil in tune and most of the sound will come from streamers.

So, could I just turn my 15/30 NST on and off rapidly through a 555 driving a mosfet or power transistor (than can handle house current, or even dialed down a bit through a variac) ?  Would it do any harm to the primary of the NST, being on and off that way?  As its usually the secondary alternating rapidly through th SG...

and by the way I happened to notices they have mosfets at radioshack in the parts drawer now for about 2 bucks
