Re: [TCML] series vs parallel LC tank circuits

At the bottom of this writeup is the conclusion and it's very clear and straight forward.

Hi Jeremy,

I must assume you are referring to the spark gap-type Tesla coil. All of these depend on a parallel resonant tank circuit. The only difference is whether the input current is applied across the tank capacitor or across the spark gap. I've used both setups and they both work. Since the mid-1990s, I've wired all my coils to apply the input juice across the spark gap. The consensus of the TCML gurus is that this allows the spark gap to pull double duty as a voltage limiter, while protecting the power supply from any resonant rise voltage spikes which might appear on the tank cap. I've done no measurements or experiments to confirm this benefit, but the thesis sounds reasonable.

This topic is well covered in the TCML archives. A browse through past threads on the subject is highly recommended.

what are the relative advantages/disadvantages of the 2
different configurations in the tesla coil primary tank
circuit? (series vs parallel primary cap bank and primary
coil connections) which would you guys recommend?
