Re: [TCML] Advice on MMC

Hi Andrew,

no worries. Javatc does have many cap size values listed (in the tranny section). It's pretty simple really...

The resonant cap value is simply the capacitance at which the transformer is resonant. This is "not" a preferred value to use as the resonance associated will cause very high voltage transients and can over volt the transformer secondary windings.

The static gap and rsg values are the capacitance values recommended should you use a static gap or rsg. In these cases, yes, they are recommended for the main tank cap size for each scenario. In both cases, LTR is always recommended, but note that for an RSG and for a Static Gap, the LTR value is different.

An ARSG is not recommended for NST type transformers which are quite fragile. Other more tolerant transformers like pigs and PT's can handle the async situation far better.

In any event, if your building a static gap, then use the LTR static gap value (or near). You don't have to be exact. It simply a good ballpark value.

Take care,
Bart

Hi I have been using Javatc to help me design my coil. I am currently trying to
decide on the correct capacitance value for the tank cap but am a little
confused about all the different capacitor values mentioned.
They are:-
Primary Capacitor uF ; I am asuming this is the actual tank cap used.
Resonant Cap Size, I think this is the capacitance value that resonates with
the transformer at 50 hz.
Power factor cap size, To correct the PF. Static gap LTR cap size, Is this the same as the Tank Cap? srsg LTR cap size. ditto but for a Sync gap. I was planning to use an asynchronous spark gap but from what I have read this is not recommended for coils designed with Java TC, so for simplicity I will go with a multi pipe static gap. My transformer is
4x MOT. I am building a Terry filter for it.
My question is, what is the best way to use Java TC to estimate the optimum Tank Capacitor size. When I know that, I can order my caps for the MMC. Many thanks
