Re: [TCML] Spherical topload SGTC

Liviu -

The "single swirling streamer" effect can occur with small toroids also. This has been observed by both Gary Lau and myself, with small "desktop" coils using squat toroids ~3" chord X 6" diameter. My coil usually generates multiple streamers darting in all directions, but several times a minute the darting streamers will suddenly converge into a single, nearly vertical, rotating streamer that persists for 10 or 15 seconds before reverting to the multiple streamer mode. When the single streamer forms, the sound of the discharge changes from the usual snapping & popping to a quieter sizzling/hissing. The coil has only been run indoors where there are no significant air currents.

Herr Zapp

Hi
The streamer tends to rotate when it reaches the lateral part of the sphere, so I believe that it has something to do with the rising hot current air from the spark.
