RE: [TCML] VTTC Curent Draw

Hi Philip, You didn't say how many turns of primary your running. I
usually run 30-33 turns for the primary for my toob coils. I haven't
found the tickler coil to be very critical. You need to turn the toob
off; -hard-. Minor tuning here didn't make much difference on my VTTC.
Generally, we set the current through the tube by adjusting the GL
resistor. I think I use about 3K ohms for the GL resistor.

Philip,
That doesnt sound right. My 833c coil isnt exactly in tune yet but
Im getting around 20 inches and my coil draws around 15 amps at 100% on
the variac. I'm only using 1 mot at the moment.

Subject: [TCML] VTTC Curent Draw

I've been tinkering with my 833C for several weeks now. Unfortunately
no matter what I do the thing seems to want to pull 50A at full voltage.
I'm getting some pretty nice performance out of it now [20-24"] in
continuous mode @ 100V/50A. I know the coil is in tune, I've tried
removing
turns, and I've tried adding a little capacitance and both of those
result
in shorter raspy sparks. I don't think the grid is the problem. I've
tried
both CW wound grid coils and CCW wound grid coils. All my grid coils
have
been 22 turns. My primary and secondary are both wound CW.

I'm using two large (nearly identical) series wired MOTs which go
through a doubler consisting
of a rectifier and 2nF 13kV filter cap. My tank cap is a 12kV 2nF mica
transmitting cap. My grid resistor is 10K, and I have a 2nF doorknob in
parallel with that. My primary is 28 turns of 8AWG. My secondary is
17" of
26 AWG.

What could be causing this current draw? Is the amount of current
I'm drawing in line with the spark output I'm getting?
