Re: [TCML] Twin Coil Prototype at Maker Faire

Hi Greg,

Wow! 105" tall secondaries! That's nearly 9 ft. tall. I didn't
realize from watching the video that the secondaries themselves
were that tall. I wish that I had the available overhead clearance
in my garage just to allow storage, not to mention operation, of
beasts of that calibre ;^) 8 ft. celings don't allow for housing beasts like that. As a matter of fact, I have to "decapitate" the top load from my Green Monster coil system to wheel it in and out of my garage door for setup and operation.

Not the best video quality and I have since improved the ope-
rational smoothness and power by further mods to the ARSG
(no more racing sparks, either) ;^) but this should give a good
idea of my coil's operational perfromance. The top of the toroid
is about 7.5 ft. above ground level.

Hi Terry,

They're fairly straightforward coils, secondary form is 24"x105", toroid is 11"x55". These dimensions are 1:12 scale of the 12-story NLL design. These prototype coils are used mainly to test design concepts for the NLL coils. The primary drive is the conventional C-switch-L scheme, with IGBT's in place of a spark gap for improved efficiency and control. The primary operates at 3kV, 4.5kA. Currently, the system can produce an 18ft point-to-point arc with about 6kW input power. Although the prototype operates from either single or three-phase power for convenience of demonstration, the final NLL design will use a dedicated six-phase, 20kV system. GL

Hi Greg,

What can you tell us about the topology /design/specs of these coils?
