Re: [TCML] Toroid thickness effects (spark length )

Hello John,

Thanks for the data. It gives me a goal .
Right now, I am repackaging everything in what hopefully will be
an interesting finished form, and building a website for photos.

Alex,

My TT-42 coil produces 42" sparks from a robust 12/30 NST.  A  regular
12/30 NST gives 38" sparks.  To obtain this kind of efficiency  requires
a 120 bps sync gap, or a 120 bps triggered gap.  Also the  capacitor
must be large enough.  I use an 0.014uF cap.  I use a 4" x  13" toroid.
As a test, I once installed a 6" x 24" toroid.  Then the coil gave  44"
sparks.
The secondary is 4.2" dia by 19" tall.

Gary Lau's coil uses a 15/60 NST and produces 80" sparks  using
a 120 bps sync gap.  He uses a rather large capacitor and  toroid.
His secondary is larger too.

In other tests I've obtained 58" to 62" sparks from a 4" coil.

Cheers,
John
