In my limited experience coiling I found an epoxy to be very nice for
varnishing coils.  If you buy the two part stuff from Home Depot or Lowes
you'll be more than satisfied.  It's labeled as being for bartops, embedding
photos in surfaces, etc.  You'll know it when you see it.  Make sure you use
a rubber spatula to apply the stuff, if you use a foam brush or otherwise it
will put bubbles into the finish.  The finish drys very hard, and is crystal
clear.
