Pictures please, I would like to see what you have first then we can figure it out.
btw, the party cup cap, at least in my case failed rather quickly. It failed with 12Kv 60mA in about 1 week of operation due inpart by ionized
air breaking down the dielectric.
In agreement with other coilers on here, defenatley test your transformer first, if you don't get sparks from either side your xmfr is toast.
