Yes, I used spark plugs as a gap before. I had to get non-resistor type
spark plugs but they did work ok. I don't believe them to be very practical
though and they wore out fairly quickly. The electrodes burnt out faster
than if they were in a car engine.

This has been tried over the years by numerous people with mixed success
and
no proven particular advantage. For a novel variation see the pamphlet "Son
of Tesla Coil" by George Trinkaus. Warning: He is really into "fringe"
science
 and, IMO, much of his speculation is to be taken with LARGE grains of salt.
Still, an interesting read, if a bit overpriced.
