Hi David,

If your going to use #26 and have 2100 ft of it, I would recommend the
6" coil (if you want to do an easy coil) as you can at least get to a
4:1 hd with 1325 turns closewound. The 8" size will take you down to a
3:1 hd. It will work, but the topload to primary sure gets close.

I've wound an 8.5" coil with #24, but it has 1789 turns on it. Not the
most optimum coil in the world (high Rac and Rdc), but it has worked
fine with an hd near 4.5:1. You can of course go that route as well, but
in your case you would be 100 turns shy of 2000 for the same hd as my
own. The coil will be even higher in Rac and Rdc (significantly higher
with Rdc due to smaller wire size). Would also need 4200 ft of wire to
do it. These high turn coils work, but they take higher power to achieve
spark lengths that could otherwise be done with a lower turn coil at
lower power.

If your ambitious, you could also wind a spacewound coil with .02"
spacing to do a 36" length with 4.5:1 hd at 1000 turns. That drops Rdc
and Rac down significantly back to the norm. Coilers have wound coils
this way using filament along side the wire as you wind it. Takes some
concentration and patience, but doable.

Take care,
Bart
