Everyone's got a point. The long wires are probaly forming an unintended
ballast. For safety's sake, you should get a ballast.

I use a MOT for my power supply(with a 4-stage multiplier). I can pull
nothing short of a full 20A out of the primary circuit when the secondary is
shorted. This only stops either when A. The wiring melts, B. the breaker
pops, or C. the secondary windings explode.

I've welded shut about 5 10A breakers through accidents with the safety gap.
When the secondary is shorted, the doubler wont do much to stop a short
circuit current. My safety gap is on the 2KV side of the MOT, and when that
fires, the arc won't extinguish, and you will have nothing short of about
18-20A pulled across the primary windings.

I really want to try shorting a MOT under oil, with 30A wires. See what
happens.

If you're using a pole pig, then if there is a short, you will have AT LEAST
a short circuit current of roughly 225A. You'll have a lot of melting wires.
