DC drives have completely disappeared from the plant I work at. They have  
been replaced by Frequency drives. Instead of using valves to control flow a  
frequency drive on the pump controls the flow with the pump curve programmed in  
controllers to make it linear.
 
While DC Transmission is still used, you do have the problem of regulation.
