When the quench fails the spark output actually "shrinks" to less than 1/2 it's normal size as the electrode tips get red hot.

The parallel copper tube design has been tested by many experimenters and is the recommended way to go. Large surface area, excellent quenching, and good heat dissipation for use with a standard NST.
